I’ve been privy to the work of Jan Chipchase and Studio D Radiodurans for some time now. William Gibson famously wrote that “The future is already here — it’s just not evenly distributed,” and Chipchase’s work consistently endeavours to shine a light on that notion.

He recently shared some insights from his work in remote Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan’s GBAO region and China’s western provinces. Some favourites:

  • 14. Pretentious people are inherently less curious.
  • 17. Every time you describe someone in your own country as a terrorist, a freedom is taken away from a person in another country.
  • 21. The sharing economy is alive and well, and has nothing to with your idea of the sharing economy.
  • 58. If you want to understand where a country is heading pick a 2nd or 3rd tier city and revisit it over many years.
